WHITEFISH BOYS DEFEND CROWN
WHITEFISH — This year’s class A state golf tournament had some competition from Mother Nature forcing a rescheduling, new venue and new hole count. But that didn’t stop Polson’s Cody Fischer and Natalia Arlint from taking home top 15 finishes. Arlint finished 14th and Fischer 15th. The top 15 golfers are recognized.
The event, originally scheduled for Oct. 9-10 at the Village Green Golf Course in Kalispell for 36 holes, was delayed until Monday following last weekend’s arctic weather front.
After Village Green still had snow on the course on Monday, the event was moved to Whitefish Lake Golf Club. A late start prompted organizers to cut the event from 36-holes to 27.
The kids have been quite cold, Bill Owen, Polson golf coach, said after Monday’s rounds were finished.
High school golfers from around the state weren’t able to begin their 18-holes until 1 p.m. Monday afternoon. None of the competitors were able to complete all 18 holes before the sun sunk and play ended for the day.
“I think the most any of our golfers got done was 15,” Owen said.
Tuesday’s forecast predicted warmer weather, but the event still didn’t get underway until the afternoon hours.
RESULTS
WHITEFISH – The Whitefish boys and Billings Central girls put an end to the Class A golf season by winning state titles at Whitefish Lake Golf Club on Tuesday.
Whitefish had three golfers finish in the top four, led by individual winner Reed Platke, who scored a 113 through 27 holes. Tuesday’s final round was cut down to just nine holes because of weather concerns.
The Bulldogs, who won their second straight State A boys’ title, finished with a two-day total of 473, which was 40 shots better than Hamilton (513). Laurel (522) was third.
Whitefish’s Joe Blakemore and Sidney’s Neil Martin both shot 117 for the tournament to tie as individual runners-up. Whitefish’s Zack Maassen was next in line with a 119.
Platke, who had the low round of the tourney with a 76 on Monday, was the runner-up a year ago.
The Central girls placed all five of their golfers in the top 10, led by runner-up Kyla Clancy, who fired a 27-hole total of 120. The Rams carded 536 for the tourney.
Sidney’s Katelyn Frank scored 116 to win the girls’ individual honor for a second straight year. She led her team to a second-place finish, 47 shots behind Central.
Laurel (584) was third in the team competition, while Glendive’s Katy Peterson (124) was third individually.
