State A wrestling: Blue Ponies grab lead on opening day

Results: First Round – Quarterfinals – First Consolation – Second Consolation

BILLINGS – The buzzsaw that is the Havre wrestling team is just getting warmed up.

The top-ranked Blue Ponies grabbed a narrow lead on the rest of the Class A competition on the opening day of the All-Class state meet Friday inside the Rimrock Auto Arena.

Havre scored 111 points and pushed eight wrestlers through to the semifinals. The three-time defending State A champs had a commanding lead after the first day of competition last season, when the Blue Ponies set a state record for points.

Second-ranked Belgrade is a close second right now with 102.5 points, while three western Montana teams, No. 9 Corvallis (88), No. 4 Polson (84) and No. 3 Frenchtown-Alberton (77), round out the top five. Ronan (56) is eighth. The Chiefs took third at state last year.

The Blue Devils, who have 10 wrestlers still alive, seemed to pull off the biggest surprises on Friday.

“We had to if we wanted a chance,” said Corvallis coach Jeff Nagel. “Hopefully we’re still in it (Saturday).”

All of the top individuals held to form, with the only exception coming at 152 pounds where Belgrade senior Tucker Taylor lost a quarterfinal match. He was the only returning champ out of nine to lose on the first day.

Polson senior Brock Picard won twice by pin to keep his hopes alive for a third consecutive individual title. The 171-pounder stuck Livingston’s Kyle Dirette in the first period and Billings Central’s Tad Logan-Maxon in the third period.

The Pirates qualified five wrestlers for Saturday’s semifinal round, as did Belgrade and Frenchtown.

Other Polson wrestlers to join Picard in the next-to-last round are freshman Craig Feistner (98), junior Jacob Young (135) and seniors Ty Fouty (152) and Kaden Thomas (heavyweight). Thomas meets Havre’s Mitch Schnittgen in the semifinals. Schnittgen is one of two Blue Ponies still in the hunt for a second straight title.

Frenchtown sophomore Cody Ishler (112) is another champ from the 2009 class that is back in the semifinals. He is joined by senior Tyler Stedman (119), who won a title for the Broncs two years ago. There’s also Brad Nordahl (145), Russell Dorsman (189) and Brennan Fisher (215).

The Corvallis contingent includes sophomore semifinalists Marcus Malone (105), Travis Davis (125), Kenny Thomas (130) and Riley Nagel (140). Three were state-placers a year ago, led by Davis’ runner-up finish.

Ronan advanced four wrestlers to the semis, including both of its returning state champs in seniors Cameron Neiss (130) and Micky Cheff (152). Juniors Cole McArthur (160) and Toby Cheff (171) also won quarterfinal matches. Micky Cheff has a tough road ahead if he wants to repeat.

“Tell me about it,” said Cheff, who wrestles Laurel’s Dylan Kramer in the semis.

The 152-pound weight division started the day with three former champs in the field, including Havre senior Kent Pattison, who’ll meet Fouty in the other semi. Pattison is ranked No. 1 and Kramer is ranked No. 2 at their weight.

Columbia Falls put four wrestlers in the semis. Sal Baccaro (112), brothers Justin and Shawn Whitman at 119 and 140, respectively, and senior Kelly Houle (215), who was a state runner-up a year ago.

Hamilton senior Paul Donaldson also made it at 215 and classmate Wes Sherman, another runner-up from ’09, made it at heavyweight. Kyle Leir (135) and Kyle Sweedman (171) are Libby’s semifinalists.
