Lady Pirates defend divisional title

LIBBY — It was the same old story for the Polson girls track team, but in Columbia Falls there’s a new boys divisional champion team.

On Saturday, the Pirates wrapped up the two-day meet by defending their Northwestern A girls track title with a 216-point performance while the Columbia Falls boys did their own piling up, totaling 206 points and winning the program’s first divisional trophy since 1993.

Polson had four first-place finishers and 17 top-five performances on the final day and repeated as the best in the Northwest for the first time since the program did it in 2003 and 2004. Both those years Polson went on to win state.

Senior Nicole Davey turned in the second-best 300 hurdles time by a Class A girl this spring when she won her marquee event in 45.90 seconds. Davey, who won two events on Friday, also helped Polson’s 1,600 relay team to a win. The Pirates cruised to victory in 4:09.14, which is the third-best time by a girls’ team going into the State A meet next weekend in Laurel.

Mesa Starkey won the 3,200. Loni Havlovick had the top shot put and came in second in the javelin. Redcrow was also second in the long jump and tied for third in the 300 hurdles. Finley went on to place fourth in the long jump.

Whitefish’s Amanda Foley won both the 100 and 200, Carly Schwickert posted the top 800 time and Olivia Nagler had the best javelin and fourth best high jump.

Kelsey DeWit of Columbia Falls won the high jump and Adessa Durglo of Ronan-St. Ignatius won the long jump.

Whitefish was second with 131 1/2 and Columbia Falls was third with 74 1/2.

On the boys side, Polson was second place with 116 and Whitefish third with 85.

Columbia Falls had three individuals win Saturday on its way to snapping Whitefish’s two-year reign in the boys’ competition. The Wildcats had 206 points, followed by Polson (116) and Whitefish (85).

Distance runners Derrick Williams, in the 800, and Justin Whitman, in the 3,200, keyed the Columbia Falls assault. Williams’ time of 1:59.18 now leads all Class A runners in the 800. Taylor Martinson added a long jump victory for the Wildcats with a mark of 20-0.

Whitefish speedster Anto Daoud was just as impressive on the second day of the meet as he was on Day 1. Daoud won the 200 in 22.47 and ran anchor on the Bulldogs’ winning 1,600 relay, which set the new state lead for Class A teams at 3:26.26. Daoud, who won the 400 and helped win the short relay on Friday, was third in the 100 finals to Ronan’s Jordan Franklin and Martinson. Franklin also won the high jump.

Polson had a pair of throwers earn divisional titles. Brock Picard won the javelin and Alex Havlovick took the shot. Libby’s Kody Berget broke into the state bests with his winning time (40.08) in the 300 hurdles.
The Polson girls are striding into Laurel for this week’s state meet with the chance of winning their second state title in three years. The Pirates last won in 2008 and placed third last year.

Rounding out the boys individual winners were Ronan-St. Ingatius’ Jordan Franklin (100, high jump), Whitefish’s Anto Daoud (200), Libby’s Kody Berget (300 hurdles) and Polson’s Brock Picard (javelin) and Alex Havlovick (shot put).

The top five finishers in all events advanced to state.
