Flathead 3-0, Glacier 2-1 at Mining City Duals

BUTTE — The Flathead Braves went 3-0 on the mat at the first day of the Mining City Duals at the Butte Civic Center on Friday, winning their pool and earning them a spot in the championship bracket today.

Flathead is 7-0 on the season.

“We are getting better,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said. “That’s all you can ask for as a program.”

The Braves take on Missoula Big Sky at 9 a.m. today.

Glacier had three wrestlers go 3-0 on Friday: Teegan Vasquez (113), Alec Thomas (205) and Camryn Vergeront and was second in its pool.

“Great start to the tournament today, the teamed really fought for each other,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said. After some tough individual losses during the duals, the next guy came in ready and battled back for the team. Fun to see them work for each other like that.”

The Wolfpack will face Frenchtown today in the final day of action.

Columbia Falls went 1-2, beating Havre 39-35 in its last match of the day.

Polson was 0-3 in its pool.

Polson splits in wrestling duals

POLSON ­— Glacier won two matches and Polson split on the mat at a dual with Dillon/Twin Bridges/Sheridan on Tuesday.

“Coming off a long grueling weekend I thought the kids responded well to the quick turn around,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said. “I thought overall we were the aggressors even if we didn’t get the win in a few of those matches.”

Glacier’s lineup was shuffled a bit due to some injuries but Thomas Putnam (113) and Hunter Magness (126) stepped in to fill the gap.

Magness pinned Gunner Wright of Dillon/Twin Bridges/Sheridan in 0:58.

Polson won a tie breaker with Dillon/Twin Bridges/Sheridan due to one team having more forfeits than the other.

Glacier next goes to the CMR Holiday Classic in Great Falls on Friday. Polson heads to the Tri-State Tournament in Coeur d’Alene, also beginning on Friday.

Pirates tops at Buzz Lucey Invitational

Polson claimed the 2019 Buzz Lucey title with 190 team points. Eureka (159), Kalispell Glacier (123), Kalispell Flathead (113) and Arlee (79) rounded out the top-five. The Pirates had eight wrestlers in the championship finals, with four taking titles. Maysn Cowell pinned Kalispell Glacier’s Curtis Wiley for the first win of finals for Polson, pinning Wiley in 1:06. Polson also got pins from Kendrick Baker, Logan Adler and Jamison Webster at 126, 160 and 205, respectively. Kyle Durden (132), Nathan Schmidt (138), Johnny Fehr (170) and Dominick Babcock (182) were all winners for the host Lions.

C-Falls, Polson, Libby in Western dual championship

RONAN — Columbia Falls wrestlers went 4-0 in pool play to win the pool and advance to the championship round of the Western Montana Duals in Ronan on Friday.

Libby, who went 3-1 in pool play, will face Columbia Falls in the championships, which start at 11 a.m. today.

Polson takes on Townsend after going 3-1 in its pool on Friday.

Frenchtown reached the finals of the Western Montana Duals in Ronan before losing to Townsend, 42-36. Townsend benefited from three forfeit wins in the chipper. The Broncs reached the championship with a 48-30 win over Columbia Falls. Townsend reached the chipper with a 42-35 victory over Mission-Charlo. MHSA STATE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sidney scored a record 310.5 points last year and surpassed that total by the end of wrestlebacks. The Eagles won their third consecutive state crown and 11th overall.

They had eight in the finals and seven of them won, including two-time champions Aden Graves, Jett Jones and Riley Waters. Sidney ended with 340 points and Frenchtown was next with 158.5.

Columbia Falls was eighth at 72. Justin Windauer took third at 113 for the Matcats, as did Braydon Stone at 182. Lucas Thacker added a fifth at 152 and Josh Bertrand was sixth at 170.

The championship matches began at 132 pounds so fans could end the night with a showdown between Frenchtown’s three-time champion, Jake “The Toothache” Bibler and Lewistown’s two-time champion Cooper Birdwell at 126. The unbeaten Birdwell won 15-2.

Libby’s Xander Spady lasted 4:32 with Birdwell in the semifinals and ended up fourth at 126.

Kedrick Baker was Polson’s lone place winner taking 5th at 126.
